CONNIE WAWRUCK-HEMMETT - CUSTOMIZED CREATIVITY/ARTIST RETREAT

Day One
“I am a multimedia artist drawn to mask making and soapstone carving for jewelry. After losing my husband last year following 58 years of marriage, I came to Journey Home Artist Retreat hoping to heal my heart and soothe my soul. After speaking with Sherry, I felt this week might offer something deeper than traditional grief counselling — and my physician agreed.”

Day Seven
“When I first saw an ad for an artist retreat here in Manitoba, I had no idea how deeply it would affect me. During this week with Sherry and Robert, I experienced a true transformation. I came hoping for healing, and I am leaving with so much more.

Sherry’s warmth, nurturing spirit, and incredible meals fed both body and soul. Robert’s wisdom and guidance helped me reconnect with my creativity and better understand who I truly am.

The conversations around your table — filled with honesty, laughter, and reflection — will stay with me always. I leave with deep gratitude and the feeling that a part of my heart will always remain here.”

Rebecca Sawdon – Contemporary Dance Artist

I am an independent contemporary dance artist based in Treaty 1 Territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba. My work spans performance, choreography, education, and producing, with professional collaborations including Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers, New Dance Horizons, and others. My artistic work has taken me across Canada and Europe, including residencies in Iceland and Germany and training intensives in Italy and Austria.

As the founder and Artistic Director of Sawdon Dance, I create performance opportunities and accessible training for the dance community. My projects include solo productions, touring performances, and research residencies. I hold a BA Honours in Dance from the University of Winnipeg and trained in the Senior Professional Program at the School of Contemporary Dancers.

My residency at Journey Home Creative Healing Retreat in rural Waldersee, Manitoba offers a unique opportunity to deepen both my creative practice and personal healing. Guided by artists and facilitators Robert Christiani and Sherry Lynn, I will explore a creative process that integrates sculpture, movement, and energy-based healing practices in a quiet natural environment.

Working with Robert, I will learn traditional soapstone carving techniques, shaping stone entirely by hand. This process connects directly to my current choreographic work, Heart Stone, an installation-style dance performance that explores mental health, life cycles, and the relationship between human emotion and the natural world. Carving stone will offer new insight into movement, pressure, repetition, and physical expression—deepening the movement language within the piece.

Alongside this creative work, Sherry will guide me through energy healing practices that support emotional and physical recovery. These experiences will deepen my understanding of the body–mind connection, enriching my work as a performer, choreographer, and educator.

This residency offers a rare space for healing, creativity, and reflection. At a pivotal moment in my artistic process, it will help me complete Heart Stone while nurturing both my spirit and my practice.
